to participate in fun-filled, safe summer activity.
Youth:
Thursday Teen Drop-In (New)
Each Thursday from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. enjoy games, activities,
food and fun! Our new Teen Drop-In provides youth between 11 and 18-years-old
with the opportunity to come together in friendship, to enjoy a good
meal and to get involved with others in their community.
Parents:
'Hands Up'
The ‘Hands Up’ Program is offered to single parents with pre-school
children. It runs several times during the year. The course offers
a variety of classes that include self awareness, personal growth,
parenting, effective communication, first aid, safety in the home,
introduction to community resources, networking with career placement
staff, nutrition, meal preparation and shopping on a budget, money
management etc. Students from the Kwantlen Polytechnic University
Faculty of Nursing and Douglas College Nursing help to plan and organize
the sessions and also facilitate classes. This is a wonderful partnership
between the students, faculty and the Mission.
Nobody's Perfect Parenting
Support for children from birth to age 5. Mothers and fathers receive
support from a group of other parents who, like themselves, want to
discuss real-life parenting situations, identify relevant issues to
discuss, and gain valuable knowledge and understanding of their children's
health, safety and behaviour issues.
Food Skills for Families
This runs for a six week time period throughout the year and offers
a variety of information, menu planning, shopping and preparation
of nutritious menus for families, single people and seniors on a limited
budget. After you cook you eat the tasty and nutritious meal that
has been prepared. This program runs in conjunction with the Canadian
Diabetes Association.
Women:
Off the Block
This is a program for women who are living in poverty or are homeless
and those who are involved in the sex trade. Join us for a hot meal,
conversation, networking and the opportunity to find out about community
resources. Clothing and small household items are available each week.
General
NEW: Bridges to LIFE
The LIFE (Living Independently For Ever!) program is designed for
recently homeless people who have found accommodation and those who
are still homeless and awaiting the opportunity to be housed as they
strive to make a positive transition into their new communities.
One central goal of LIFE is to develop ‘intentional friendships’, matching people from the community with a ‘friend’ who is moving into a Surrey neighbourhood. We hope to connect caring individuals from the community with a person who is making a new start, providing a supportive community network and friendship as people seek to move forward in their lives.
Our Monday evening social night brings people together and it is hoped that intentional as well as spontaneous friendships develop. We hope and expect that friendships will last beyond the life of the program.
LIFE offers Surrey residents a tangible way to welcome people into
their community and provides a unique volunteer opportunity for compassionate
people who want to help make a distinct difference in the life of
another.
